SUMMARY:SANBORN GRATIOT MEMORIAL HOME TO HOST BOAT RAFFLE KICK-OFF PARTY AT MCMORRAN PLACE
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nFebruary 22\, 2024 \n Event is Free and Open to the Public \nSANBORN GRATIOT MEMORIAL HOME TO HOST \nBOAT RAFFLE KICK-OFF PARTY AT MCMORRAN PLACE \n PORT HURON\, Mich. – Sanborn Gratiot Memorial Home of Port Huron\, a nonprofit assisted living facility for low-income seniors\, is hosting a Boat Raffle Kick-Off Party to celebrate its first major fundraising project of 2024. \n The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday\, March 21 at Casey’s on the Plaza (indoors) at McMorran Place in downtown Port Huron. Music\, food and fun will be available. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free\, but pre-registration is requested here: Sanborn Gratiot Boat Raffle Kick-Off Party Registration. \n Earlier this year\, SGMH began selling raffle tickets for a brand new 19.5-foot Sea Ray 190SPX. The boat comes with a trailer. This event is free of charge. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cash bar. Boat raffle tickets will be available for purchase. Cost of raffle tickets is $100/each. Raffle ticket purchase not required to attend event. Only 5\,000 raffle tickets will be sold. The boat will be on-site at the kick-off party\, weather permitting. \n The winning ticket will be drawn at an event at the Port Huron Yacht Club in July. \n“An integral part of the Sanborn Gratiot mission is reserving space for residents who are unable to pay for services\,” said Lisa Beedon\, executive director of Blue Water Developmental Housing\, Inc.\, the umbrella organization that manages operations at SGMH. “The funds raised by this raffle will help us meet that need and fulfill our mission.” \nBeedon noted that Sanborn Gratiot Memorial Home provides a place to live for residents of St. Clair County who might otherwise have nowhere to go. \n “Donations from fundraisers like this one enable us to help those who are most vulnerable in our community\,” said Beedon. “Your dollars make a direct impact on the care they receive.” \n Tickets will be available for purchase at the kick-off party\, or they can be purchased on the Sanborn Gratiot Memorial Home website: Boat Raffle Ticket Purchase \n Please visit the Sanborn Gratiot Memorial Home website for more information about the nonprofit\, and the Blue Water Developmental Housing\, Inc. website for more information about the managing organization. \n Since 1944\, Sanborn Gratiot Memorial Home has provided quality assisted living to lower income seniors\, many of whom had no other housing alternative. Sanborn Home is the only “licensed home for the aged” in St. Clair County and the only senior residence with a mission to serve lower income individuals.  \n It is the mission of Sanborn Gratiot Memorial Home to provide an affordable\, comfortable\, safe\, assisted living home to the aging community while striving to maintain a high quality of life for our residents through social activities and family involvement.

SUMMARY:SC4 is hosting an African American Literature Read In event
DESCRIPTION:  \nSC4 Participates in National African American Read-In: Celebrating Literature\, Diversity\, and Community. \nSC4 is hosting an African American Literature Read In event as part of the annual National African American Read-In.  The National Read-In was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English.  SC4 is hosting an event on February 24th\, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the SC4 Fine Arts Theatre. The event at SC4 is free to all attendees.  The Read-In at SC4 will feature local K-12 student readers sharing from children’s literature by African American authors.  This event aims to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month while celebrating the rich contributions of African American literature to the broader literary landscape. \nHighlighting this year’s Read-In will be a dynamic conversation between SC4’s English professor\, Chris Hilton\, and Chief Diversity Officer Jessica Brown. Together\, they will explore the importance of the National Read-In and its role in promoting literacy and cultural understanding. \nProfessor Hilton brings a wealth of experience to the discussion\, with over 20 years of teaching literature. Raised in Wyoming\, Professor Hilton’s upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for the narrative power of place\, history\, and identity\, which he brings to his academic pursuits. \nThroughout his career\, Professor Hilton has dedicated himself to studying and teaching American literature\, with a particular focus on African American literature. His expertise lies in analyzing the multifaceted narratives of the American experience\, emphasizing the historical\, cultural\, and artistic contributions of African American writers. \nAdditionally\, Professor Hilton has championed children’s literature\, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping young minds and fostering a lifelong love for reading and openness. \nProfessor Hilton’s approach to literature is grounded in a profound understanding of its power to reflect and shape society\, engage with complex identities\, and bridge diverse experiences. \nWe are proud to announce the participation of the following schools in this year’s Read-In: \n\nCleveland Elementary\nWoodrow Wilson Elementary\nRoosevelt Elementary\nGarfield Elementary\nCentral Middle School\nHolland Woods Middle School\nPort Huron High School\nMarysville High School\n\nWe extend a warm invitation to the public\, including K-12 students\, SC4 students\, faculty\, staff\, and community members\, to join us for this inspiring event. The Read-In promises enriching discussions\, engaging activities\, and a celebration of African American literature’s profound impact on our cultural tapestry. \nJoin us on Saturday\, February 24\, at 10:00 a.m. at the SC4 Fine Arts Theatre\, as we come together to celebrate the beauty and significance of African American literature and promote literacy within our community. \nFor media inquiries\, please contact Chief of Staff\, Sarah Rutallie\, at srutallie@sc4.edu. \n
