Homebuyer Education and Counseling

The Homebuyer Education class walks you through the process of homeownership from start to finish. Topics covered during the class include, but are not limited to the following: types of home loans, credit requirements, determining affordability, what costs to expect, the importance of receiving a home inspection, mortgage terms, working with a realtor, budgeting, saving, goal-setting, protecting your investment, fair housing, and much more! This class also fulfills the requirement for possible down payment assistance through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) and the City of Port Huron.  Furthermore, this class fills the requirement if a mortgage loan is being obtained through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

This FREE class is open to residents of St. Clair, Sanilac, Huron, Lapeer, Tuscola, and Macomb counties. To register for an upcoming session, please contact us using the information listed on the right-hand side of this page or call our main office phone at 810-982-8541.  One-on-One Housing Counseling services are also offered to help individuals get ready for homeownership.  Individual Housing Counseling services include, but are not limited to the creation of a budget, a credit review, a housing action plan, and referrals.

A self-paced online class is available through eHome America. This option offers a convenient way to obtain a Homebuyer Education certificate from home. There is a $99.00 charge for this option. Please contact the Asset Development Department if the online class is unaffordable for you.
